It's a myth most Democrats
want "open borders". In 2014, Democrats asked for more
funding for border guards and border surveillance, but GOP turned them
down, some citing the deficit (which they later magically stopped
caring about). A working solution will require multiple efforts in multiple areas.
A wall won't be of much use
if people can climb over and dig under without anybody detecting. A sufficient number of guards and inspectors is needed.
A real solution to reduce
illegal immigrants will also involve auditing business hiring, but businesses
really don't want this. Business has deep pockets to fund (bribe) GOP
to look the other way. It would cost business time and money; plus,
business has enjoyed a cheap supply of labor (for good or bad). They
won't support an interruption of this. GOP will probably continue to give in to business.
Some kind of amnesty will also be
needed. It's unrealistic to hunt down and deport that many people;
let alone being intrusive and disruptive to families, courts, businesses, and schools.
Even Ronald Reagan knew this.
